In 1853 the Blundstone family moved to the capital of the Australian island of Tasmania. John Blundstone, the head of the family, starts importing boots all the way from the United Kingdom. Later on, John decides to create his own boot. These boots where made of locally produced leather. It all started as a hobby, because of the huge success John found his brand Blundstone in 1870 in Tasmania. John built his shoe factory in the modern center of Hobart, Tasmania. In order to keep the company going and to continue selling, the company was taken over by the English Cuthbertson family in 1932. The Cuthbertson family already owned a leather producing company in Hobart. With this acquisition, the manufacturing activities of the two companies were merged and continued with the name Blundstone. They chose the name Blundstone because this name is associated with quality and reliability.
